The Rood Screen

Praise the LORD!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens!
Ps 150,1

Picture: View through the rood screen toward the altar One of the most prominent features of our church is the rood screen, a sort of dividing wall commonly found in medieval monasteries but rarely to be seen in village churches - at least outside of East Frisia.
Originally, there were more than twenty rood screens in East Frisian village churches, five of which still exist nowadays.

In medieval times, such a screen separated the sanctuary to which only the priests had access from the people's worshipping area, the nave.
Small openings in the rood screen of our church support this idea: These so-called "squints" made it possible for the congregation to follow the mass the priests celebrated in the sanctuary.

Psalm 150

Praise the LORD!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens!

Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.

Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
praise him with tambourine and dancing,
praise him with the strings and flute,
praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.

Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD!
